Issue 55 of bi-monthly UK magazine ‘Selvedge’, which covers every facet of textiles, features an article titled ‘The Revival of Silk Ikat Weaving in Uzbekistan’ that outlines research by Philippa Watkins of the Royal College of Art (London), a participant of Fund Forum’s Style.Uz Art Week, into the history and modern trends of Uzbek ikat making. The article reflects her tireless work and inspiration by ikats.

A number of top Japanese educational institutions participated in ‘Education in Japan’ exhibition held in Tashkent on November 9 and in Samarkand on November 11. Organized by Kelajak Ovozi (Voice of the Future) YIC, Fund Forum, Nagoya University in collaboration with the Uzbekistan-Japan Center for Human Development, the exhibition drew hundreds of Uzbek students interested in studying in Japan.

The regional legs of this year’s ‘Woman of the Year’ national competition have kicked off and hundreds of women across Uzbekistan are bracing themselves to vie for the much-coveted title, with the winner slated to be unveiled in December. Thus far, around 6,500 women from Andijan and Khorezm regions as well as Tashkent city have submitted applications to the national competition.

This year’s Style.Uz Art Week has exceeded all expectations, with guests and participants from many countries witnessing a grand celebration that has presented the best that Uzbek culture and art have to offer. While each attendee has discovered something new for themselves, all of them have conferred that the big project, mix of various arts and the hospitable Uzbek people make for an unforgettable experience.

Style.Uz Art Week is the first and the biggest culture and art project of its kind in Central Asia that seeks to encourage further development of modern and traditional national fashion and arts in Uzbekistan. In 2006, the year it was launched, the project included several national and international fashion shows, a Design and Fashion Exhibition and workshops. Now in its eighth year, the project also includes Tashkent International Biennale of Contemporary Art, Tashkent Film Forum ‘Golden Guepard’ and International Festival ‘Theatre.Uz’.

This year’s Style.Uz Art Week, a major action-packed culture and art project overseen by Fund Forum, has come to an end. Over 100,000 people attended roughly 200 multifarious events held as part of Style.Uz Art Week, the Tashkent International Film Forum ‘Golden Guepard’, International Festival ‘Theatre.Uz/2013’ and the Tashkent International Biennale of Contemporary Art held on October 19-27.

Russian singer Valeriya put up a rousing performance at Tashkent’s Istiqlol Palace on the last day of Style.Uz Art Week 2013. It is often that when a change occurs to an original plan, it is a change for the better. And that was the case with the live concert by Valeria that concluded this year’s Style.Uz Art Week.

As the Third Tashkent International Film Forum ‘Golden Guepard’ nears its end, members of the jury for features, shorts and animated films are poised to select the winner entries. The key event of Day Three was the international conference ‘National Cinema in a Global World’, followed by three workshops as well as the final demonstration of in- and out-of-competition films.

The opening Ceremony of Art Week Style.uz this year has surpassed all expectations about entertainment and number of the surprises. "Art Week - small universe, which have got places for all kind of big and small projects" - such welcome words were said from crew of Expedition-37 for address of all guests and participants and it was the most unexpected and pleasant surprise for everybody. Stars of Art Week Style.uz are seen even from the space! Author of the project Gulnara Karimova has unleashed a symbolic ribbon and doors of Palace of Youth Creativity hospitably opened, inviting all guests and participants. Art Week Style.uz-2013 is declared opened!

Tashkent International Film Forum ‘Golden Guepard’ is in its midway as 3 days of the Forum have already rolled by and another 3 days remain. The agenda of the third day on October 21 included press conferences, screening of 2 in-competition features, and 5 animated and 5 short films. Four workshops were led by Hans Schlegel, Sergei Selianov, Yukihiro Matsumoto and Iskander Aminov. Screening of out-of-competition films, Program of short films “Beginning”, Panorama of Contemporary Uzbek Cinema and National Festival of Mass films “On a Par with the Audience”.

Celebrated Russian violist and conductor Yuri Bashmet, described by music critics as “one of the world’s greatest living musicians”, taught a master class to a group of young musicians at Uspensky Music School in Tashkent. The musician, whose chamber ensemble, ‘The Moscow Soloists’, won a Grammy award, is set to play a concert on Tashkent as part of Style.Uz Art Week 2013 on October 23.

Feature and documentary film demonstrations, workshops by Iran’s Abbas Kiarostami and Germany’s Hans Schlegel as well as a meeting with French documentary film maker Marion Stalens and upbeat discussions made up the second day of the Golden Guepard Film Forum. The agenda also included film screening as part of the Panorama of Uzbek Cinema and National Festival of Mass Films.

The opening ceremony of the Fourth International Theatre Festival ‘Theatre.UZ/2013’ took place at the Youth Theater of Uzbekistan. The stage of the theatre saw the premiere of a collaborative Israeli-Uzbek production ‘Happy End’, which was first unveiled in a form of a read-through with performance elements, during the ‘Theatre.UZ’ festival last year.

The Third Golden Guepard Film Forum kicked off on October 19. The first of the six days of cinematic razzmatazz included two press conferences with members of the juries for features, shorts and animated films and workshops. The day concluded with a red-carpet opening ceremony for the film forum, ushering in days of film demonstrations and workshops that will culminate with an Awards Ceremony.
